What to Expect

Clinical care for Early-Onset Osteoporosis is available within the EOC at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The EOC continually builds upon knowledge acquired through research to provide individualized, comprehensive clinical evaluation and personalized treatment for patients with Early-Onset Osteoporosis. We aim to help patients to better understand currently available information about this rare condition.

After registration and a review of medical records, patients will receive individualized, comprehensive, state-of-the-art clinical evaluation to look for causes of their condition. Laboratory assessments, bone density testing and other bone imaging are often included as part of the evaluation. After evaluation, personalized treatment and/or observation plans will be discussed in detail.

Within the EOC, bone mineral density (BMD) can be measured by dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Bone density is an important tool for assessing bone quantity and serves as an important measure of bone changes over time and responses to medication.

Although bone density testing to screen for osteoporosis is typically not recommended for healthy adults under age 50, bone density testing should be performed in many patients who are referred to the EOC: adults under age 50 who have fractures that are considered low-trauma and in those with diseases or medication exposures known to be associated with bone loss or bone fragility.
